Message from Karni Liddell… Let’s support her worthy cause…
Happy New Year! I am hoping you’re still enjoying some festive down time somewhere fun, so I will endeavor to keep this email brief as pool time is precious! I wanted to let you know about my fundraising event happening on Australia Day 26 January at the New Farm Croquet Centre (Dixon Street). The event is called Bogans and Darlings Unite for Musular Dystrophy Qld and YES this menas you dress up as either a ‘Bogan’ or a ‘Darling’ (think ‘wife-beater’ singlets, thongs, footy shorts, tutus, maxi dresses, pearls, etc. For some of you this will mean just wearing your normal, everyday attire!’)
The event is designed to be a low-key affair where we can all enjoy some bubbles, beer and a BBQ, with a side of Croquet, whilst hopefully raising some funds to purchase 1-2 sets of power- assist wheels for Muscular Dystrophy QLD. These wheels will be used as ‘spare wheels’ for people to utilize whenever their wheelchairs break and need to be sent away for repairs. Currently when this catastrophically ‘bad day at the office’ occurs, we all become either ‘bed-bound’ or ‘house-bound’ for approx 2 weeks.
These power-assist wheels which I use, cost $12 000 and are imported from Germany. These ‘super’ wheels are unquestionably the best things I own and they have absolutely enhanced my life, wellbeing, and health. These wheels are fragile and often need repairing, which requires them to be sent down to Adelaide or back to Germany. Without my power-assist wheels I transform from being an independent, social, capable, happy, professional person to a person who is incapable of leaving the front door without assistance, hence becoming dependent on my friends and family to participate in life.
As you can probably understand placing your life on hold for 2-4 weeks is incredibly difficult both professionally and personally and I only feel disabled when I don’t have my wheels. This is why I am so passionate about trying to raise enough money for MD QLD to purchase 2 sets of power-assist wheels to be used during the repair period.
I believe with the right equipment and support people living with a disability have an opportunity to live whatever life they dream up for themselves. I am hoping to inspire a little army of generous Brisbane folk to help me raise the $25 000 needed to alleviate the fear, anxiety and dread currently attached to broken wheelchairs. I believe that you get in life what you have the courage to ask for and as hard as this is for me I am asking for your help, your time and your financial support.
Muscular Dystrophy QLD is a registered charity therefore all donations are tax deductible http://www.mdqld.org.au/
(Please note you must use my name ‘Karni Liddell’ when making your donations to ensure the money goes towards the wheels). I am not going to be able to raise all the money at the event, so I am hoping for the people who work in larger corporations to be generous enough to start selling me raffle tickets from next week.
Every little bit will help – “if you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito!” By giving people with muscle diseases 365 days of the year with the peace of mind of knowing that they will always have a wheelchair is a gift I would love to deliver. I will be selling tickets to the event next week and I am hoping to send out the raffle books ASAP so if you are able to help me out here please send me your postal addresses.
Thanks so much for your time, support and generosity, I appreciate your help immensely and please start spreading the word!
